HOW IS CAFFEINE REMOVED FROM TEA? There are four methods of tea decaffeination: methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, carbon dioxide, and water processing. Premium Tea has a more in-depth explanation, but below we will break each one down into simple terms.
Methylene Chloride. This is where the leaves are soaked in the substance either directly or indirectly, but they are always put back into their original water to re absorb the oils and flavours.
This method is favoured because it is seen as the best method for maintaining the original flavour.
Ethyl Acetate. This is more of a natural method as this substance is found in tea.
This process is the same as Methylene Chloride, however Ethyl Acetate is a little more difficult to remove afterwards.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2). The leaves are ‘pressure cooked’ with CO2. It attracts the caffeine molecules and removes them from the leaves.
This is the best and most natural way to retain the flavour while decaffeinating.
Water Processing. The leaves are soaked in water and then passed through a carbon filter to remove the caffeine. They are then put back in the water to re absorb the oils and flavours.

When you drink caffeine whilst pregnant, it crosses the placenta and goes into the baby’s bloodstream. Your body can get rid of caffeine; however your baby’s body is still developing. It will take a lot longer for them to process it, meaning that they are exposed to the effects of it for a lot longer.
